High School Football Player Backs Away from USC Commitment and I Laugh

"One day, all of this crap will be yours." "Gee, thanks."

USC just cannot catch a break. I love it.

Arik Armstead, considered to be the top offensive/defensive line prospect on the West Coast by sports folks who care about such things, originally committed to the University of Spoiled Children Trojans football program on June 19, 2010. For those playing along at home, that’s nine days after the NCAA smacked down the program for what they called “improper benefits” given to then-Heisman Trophy winner and current Miami Dolphins running back Reggie Bush.

Shocker Of The Day: Titans To Cut Vince Young

Are you sitting down? Good. This one is going to be a real shocker. I don’t want you to hurt yourself when you pass out from the shock and awe. So please, for your own safety, take a seat.

I don’t know how to tell you this. Aw, screw it. I’ll just come out with it. The truth is always the best. And sometimes, the truth hurts.

The Titans plan on releasing Vince Young.

There. I said it.

Are you okay? Please don’t cry. Everything will be just fine. I promise.

Anyway, back here on planet Earth, does anyone really still care about Vince Young? I don’t know many Tennessee Titan fans, but I am assuming this is actually good news for them. So, what do you think? Do you think Young’s career is done with? Will some other team pick him up or even give him a shot for a starting job? What say you, internets?

Nazi Analogies Are Always Fail, Derek Dooley

I might not be an expert on World War II, but it seems to me from my layman’s perspective that the invasion of Normandy  and the issues currently facing the Tennessee football program might have in common exactly NOTHING.

Analogies are important. They can help illustrate points by drawing comparisons to events which are readily understandable, common knowledge even, and your own situation.

Oh no you didn't, Derek Dooley

Oh no you didn't, Derek Dooley

But making comparative analogies to negative events TIES peoples’ perceptions of you TO those events.

My husband (who will kill me for this) used to tell interviewers he had a Nazi-like work ethic. Well, there are things about that which could be perceived as positive. Nazis got stuff done. Alas, the stuff they got done was murder and carnage – NOT GOOD.

He figured out that was a bad thing to say, and quit saying it.

I’m thinking that Derek Dooley at Tennessee might realize that his football team is battered, and struggling, but in fact really isn’t a bit like the Nazi forces occupying Normandy.

Unless he means that they are about to get their asses handed to them?

Nah. He can’t mean that. Can he?

Aren’t You a Little Young to Be Committing to Tennessee?

I think that your junior year in high school is early to commit to a college. I suppose if a school offered a full ride to my kid I would be okay with it, it just seems like sometimes it is nice to keep your options open.baby_football_helmet

So clearly I think it is nuts that University of Tennessee coach, Lane Kiffin offered a scholarship to a 13 year old this week.*

I know, it sounds like I was watching a Disney movie, but it really happened.

Evan Berry has never even played in a high school football game.

I guess Kiffin (who I am starting to think may be a few cards short of a deck) has a lot of faith in good genetics. His big brother is  UT safety Eric Berry. Eric is almost certain to be drafted early in the first round of the 2009 NFL draft.

In defense of Evan, his father and brother both went to Tennessee so the odds were pretty good that he would have wanted to there anyway.

Plus, getting a full ride football scholarship to college probably gives him a good chance of scoring some 8th grade tail.**
