This…

This is what movies are made from…

From the St. Louis Post Dispatch:

Nearly 2½ years after pitching a baseball became so frustrating and draining that he decided to call it a career, Rick Ankiel completed a most remarkable reinvention by making his major-league debut as an outfielder Thursday.

The Cardinals called up the one-time pitching phenom and started him in right field against the San Diego Padres. A private welcome in the clubhouse that manager Tony La Russa called “enthusiastic” and “moving” went public in the first inning when a standing ovation greeted Ankiel as he strode toward the batter’s box.

Then came the seventh inning… and the three-run home run that propelled the Cardinals to victory and inched them ever-so-closer to the first place Brewers (no matter how many times I read or write that – it just sounds wrong)

Good for you Rick..

A Whole Different Kind of Loss

For the second time in five years, my hometown baseball team, the team I live through, has suffered a loss within its family as St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Josh Hancock was killed in a car crash early this morning.

This comes five years after the untimely passing of pitcher Darryl Kile.

Once again, the Cardinals family must come to terms with a tragic loss… a tragic loss of a popular teammate who has died in the midst of another energized Cardinals-Cubs series.

A quick glance at the Cardinals message boards and you can see the impact this has not only on the Cardinal fanbase, but on sports fans in general. An impact that can best be summed up in an article by ESPN’s Gene Wojciechowski:

“On a cloudless, sun-smooched April Sunday — a day meant for baseball, not mourning — a father stood outside the black, wrought iron gate on the third-base side of Busch Stadium and tried to explain to his young son why the St. Louis Cardinals wouldn’t be playing that evening.”

My thoughts and prayers are with Josh’s family, his friends, his teammates, and all of Cardinal nation.
