Singletary Sacked

With one game left in the season, the San Francisco 49ers have fired coach Mike Singletary less than two years after he took over as head coach.  Singletary still has two years left on his contract, but 49ers President and CEO Jed York said “money is no object.”

The news came after the 49ers lost to the St. Louis Rams on Sunday.  Had the 49ers won, and then won again next week, they would have made the playoffs despite their dismal 0-5 start to the season.  Sunday’s loss killed their playoff hopes- and was apparently the nail in the coffin for Singletary.

An interesting aside to this story: a key player in the Rams’ victory yesterday was safety OJ Atogwe.

Atogwe intercepted a pass from Troy Smith in the 3rd quarter that led to a heated exchange between Singletary and Smith on the sidelines.  Alex Smith came in at quarterback for the 49ers shortly after that to finish out the game, but he wasn’t able to salvage it.

Why is this interesting?  Because Atogwe is engaged to Singletary’s daughter.  They’re getting married in the spring.  Think your family dinners are awkward?  Imagine that you intercepted the ball in a key play in the game that got your future father-in-law fired.  Yikes.

Broncos Fire McDaniels

The Denver Broncos organization announced today that owner Pat Bowlen has released coach Josh McDaniels from his duties.

According to DenverBroncos.com, details will follow.

That means he fired him. That doesn’t mean that he doesn’t have to do stuff anymore just because, although technically that’s what that means. If the Denver Broncos were a band, the release would say “Pat Bowlen and Josh McDaniels had creative differences.” If they were getting divorced, “Pat Bowlen and Josh McDaniels had irreconcilable differences.”

Etcetera. I don’t know what gets into me sometimes.

Reports last week that Bowlen would keep McDaniels until the end of the season and maybe even after appear to have been exaggerated or just plain old inaccurate speculation. A losing record this season and a fine for the  taping of an October San Francisco 49ers practice in London on his watch likely tipped the balance for his removal as head coach.

You know what this might mean, though?

I’m guessing so.
