Carla and Crappy Show: The College Football Sucks Edition

College Football Playoff trophy

It’s the final college football game of the season … which means it’s the final Carla and Crappy Show of the season. And if you haven’t guessed by our show title this week, while we’re happy to discuss the National Championship Game, we’re maybe not as excited about our respective teams’ bowl appearances.

But we put those feelings aside … and delayed our official move to hockey season by about 20 minutes … to talk about the 2016 season and the title game between Alabama and Clemson.

We start by talking about how excited we are about the re-emergence of the Big Ten … and our disdain with the lackluster playoff games and how it’s tough to figure out how to solve that problem.

And when it comes to the title game … here’s a spoiler alert … we’re not at consensus.

Carla and Crappy Show: The 2016 Bowlapalooza Edition

And so, here we are again. It’s “the most wonderful time of the year” … otherwise known as bowl season, when we send the Directional Michigans to warmer climes and football games to baseball stadiums. And as is tradition around here, that means it’s also time for our fourth-annual Bowlapalooza.

But, because this is Season 5 of this here little show, we decided to pull out all the stops. Go big or go home. This year, we’re joined by four outstanding guests, providing their insights (as well as their bad puns, insults, and sarcastic remarks) as we talk about six of the (approximately) 2,345 bowl games being played over the next two weeks.

Our gracious guests include:

  • Braden Gall (@BradenGall), co-host of “Braden and Fitz” on ESPN’s 102.5 The Game in Nashville and host on Sirius XM’s College Sports Nation.
  • David Fox (@DavidFox615), former college sports writer turned “media guy” at Advent, a design firm that specializes in athletic facilities.
  • Jake Rose (@JakeRose24), contributor at Athlon Sports and play-by-play broadcaster for the Blue Raider Network/Learfield Sports.
  • A.J. Kuftic (@AJKuftic), long-time college football aficionado and official advocate of Pac-12 After Dark.

Games discussed in order of appearance:

  • Popeyes Bahamas Bowl (Dec. 23, 1 p.m. EST, ESPN): Eastern Michigan vs. Old Dominion
  • Dollar General Bowl (Dec. 23, 8 p.m. EST, ESPN): Ohio vs. Troy
  • Quick Lane Bowl (Dec. 26, 2:30 p.m. EST, ESPN): Maryland vs. Boston College
  • Motel 6 Cactus Bowl (Dec. 27, 10:15 p.m. EST, ESPN): Boise State vs. Baylor
  • Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl (Dec. 30, 3:30 p.m. EST, ESPN): Nebraska vs. Tennessee
  • Outback Bowl (Jan. 2, 1 p.m. EST, ABC): Florida vs. Iowa

Carla and Crappy Show: The Futbol Edition

This week’s edition of the Carla and Crappy Show is brought to you by the numbers 11, 2, and 1. It’s Week 11 of the college football season … it’s Week 2 of the College Football Playoff rankings … and it’s Week 1 of “The Hex” for the USA men’s soccer team. And yes, we have thoughts on all of those things. (Especially that the USA vs. Mexico match just got a whole lot more interesting based on the events of this week …)

After a discussion in which we both determine that we’re totally OK with the playoff committee’s current rankings (yes, you’re reading that correctly and no, we can’t believe it either), we dive into three games that will keep your remote thumbs busy on Saturday night because all three of these games happen at the same time. Start stretching now.

Carla and Crappy Show: The World Series Edition

Progressive Field

It’s Week 9 of the college football season … but never mind that. It’s World Series season, especially for one Uncle Crappy, who we had a hard time pulling away from his TV during Game 2 to record this week’s show. (So, apologies in advance for the very distracted co-host.)

All that aside, if you’re not watching baseball this weekend, there are three football games that at least one of us has our eyes on for Saturday.

Washington at Utah: A game being played way too early for a Pac-12 game could be a preview of the conference’s title game in December.

Nebraska at Wisconsin: What’s turning into one of the better new rivalries in the Big Ten will pit an undefeated Huskers team against a Badgers team that not only is still annoying (see Weeks 3 and 4), it’s played one of the toughest schedules in all of college football.

Clemson at Florida State: The Tigers are looking to secure their fate for the ACC title game; the Noles are in desperation mode and would love nothing more than to play spoiler for their rival.

Carla and Crappy Show: The White Out Edition

PSUwhiteout500

As we roll into Week 8 of the college football season, we have baseball on our brains. Well, at least Crappy does, as you’ll learn in this week’s show what it’s like to record a college football podcast less than an hour after the Cleveland Indians win the American League pennant. (Spoiler alert: It’s, umm, interesting.)

All kidding (and baseball) aside, we do take a look at three games you’ll want to pay attention to this weekend.

We start with TCU at West Virginia, two Big 12 teams that no one has talked much about yet this year. But the Mountaineers have very quietly entered this game undefeated. Will they stay that way? Or are the Horned Frogs primed to play spoiler?

Next, we look at the big one this week — Texas A&M at Alabama, a game we both really wish was being played in College Station. Do the Aggies have a chance to pull the upset? Or is Alabama just that good this year?

And finally, we look at a game that is of particular interest to both of us — Ohio State at Penn State. Beaver Stadium will be rocking its annual White Out … a situation that has, at least in fleeting moments, given the Buckeyes fits. What’s in the cards this year? (Not-so-spoiler alert: Although we have rooting interests on opposite sidelines, our pick for this game is unanimous.)
