Bo Pelini isn’t grumpier than any other coach

At some point back in the late 1980s, a couple of Ohio State Buckeye football players — one of them a free safety named Bo Pelini — visited my parents’ house to make cookies. I don’t recall the specifics, but one of the players was, uh, interested in one of Erin’s sorority sisters, who was helping with the baking that day.

Everything went fine, until my sister pulled one of the sheets out of the oven and discovered that the cookies were a little too brown on the bottom. That’s when Pelini, an intense guy even then, grabbed the pan, spiked it on the kitchen floor and started screaming about “I CAN’T BELIEVE YOU BURNED THE $!%&@(&@*&#& COOKIES.”

Disclosure: While the above story is true, the part about the burned cookies is not. I honestly don’t know whether Erin actually burned any cookies, and both players were complete gentlemen while sitting in our kitchen.

Pelini is in more serious trouble this week because of his mouth, and he’s scrambling to make amends with fans of his Nebraska Cornhuskers football team because of it. After getting in a spat with Tommie Frazier, the legendary Huskers QB who just happened to win two national titles at Nebraska — an ill-advised move for a head coach who has yet to win a conference championship or take his team to a BCS bowl — a tape of a post-game rant in which Pelini MFs a couple of local reporters and pretty much the entire Cornhuskers fan base surfaced on Deadspin.

What Coaches Did on Their Summer Vacations

Beamer wears a Viking helmet

As the summer days begin to shorten and our countdown to the start of college football season grows with anticipation, college football coaches begin to wind down their respective summers.

In the days leading up to conference media days, there are vacations and retreats and public appearances.

In most cases, they’re routine events, much like the dreaded “what I did on my summer vacation” homework assignment, where you realize that there’s no way you can convince any of your classmates that going to the zoo was cool.

Especially when you know at least one of your friends went on an exotic vacation – somewhere like Orlando or the beach or Europe.

For the 125 college head football coaches in the FBS, those exotic vacation friends are Frank Beamer, James Franklin and Frank Solich.

Read their stories and weep, coaches. Maybe next summer, if you’re lucky, they’ll send you a postcard.

Brown Fired, Lakers Win

Mike Brown

It’s been a long year and a half for Lakers fans. For a fan base accustomed to winning, big and often, the fact that they didn’t advance past the first round of the playoffs in the 2011/12 season might have been reason enough to fire head coach Mike Brown. Add a 0-8 preseason and a 1-4 record to start the 2012/13 season and the Lakers’ management had reason enough to fire Brown on Friday. Read more…

Short Track Coach Placed on Leave Due to Abuse Allegations

Fall is in the air. And as the college and NFL football seasons are gearing up, October baseball is almost upon us and the NHL lockout looms large, I know that what you can’t get enough of is…speed skating. That’s right – I said speed skating. Guys in unitards with their large and incredibly sharp, um, blades skating around in circles as fast as they can. Speed skating. Short track speed skating, to be exact. And it turns out that there is quite a shakeup going on in the short track speed skating world as nineteen current and former U.S. short track skaters have filed complaints with U.S. Speedskating and the U.S. Olympic Committee making serious accusations of abuse against short track coach Jae Su Chun and assistant coaches, Jun Hyung Yeo and Jimmy Jang, resulting in the placement of Chun on administrative leave.
