Positive Psychology for the Super Bowl Hangover

mike-tomlin

I’m kdiddy. I’m new here and I’m new to sports writing, so bear with me while I try to find something relevant to write about.

For the time being, I’ll just talk to you about what I know best: the Steelers.

As I’m sure you’re aware (and chuckling about), Super Bowl XLIII Champions the Pittsburgh Steelers did not make the playoffs this year after finishing 9 and 7.

It’s a bit of a shameful feeling. One would think that champions, even if they didn’t have a fantastic season, should at least be able to secure a spot in the playoffs. But when they don’t, and especially when that happens after your champions get their asses handed to them by the likes of the Chiefs AND the Raiders AND the Browns, you start to feel pretty sheepish.

It’s called the Super Bowl Hangover. It’s not an especially common condition, afflicting only 13 champions in 44 Super Bowls.

Of course, the last team to suffer from the Hangover was the Steelers in 2006.

Coach Mike Tomlin had some strong words after last Sunday’s win against the Dolphins, when the remaining scenario that would get us into the playoffs was clearly not going to happen. He made it clear that he’s here to win championships. And while that’s obviously what the goal is and should be for everyone, I found myself wishing that he would throw the team and coaching staff a bone. We tried. We failed. It happens.

Let’s just not let it happen again, m’kay?
