Welcome to Week 12 … where we spend a whole lot of time at the top of the show talking about this week’s College Football Playoff rankings. (Editor’s note: A fair warning … we recorded this show on Tuesday. So keep that in mind. And disregard everything I say about Louisville.)
So, while teams in the Top 6 not named Alabama are taking advantage of this weekend to stake their claims to a playoff spot (well, of course, except for the aforementioned Louisville, ahem) … we once again bemoan the SEC’s Week of Cupcakes this late in the season. (For the fifth-consecutive year … c’mon SEC. Play your cupcakes in Weeks 1-3. For reals.)
As I step down off of my soapbox, here is a word of comfort. Yes, we do actually talk about actual college football games that are being played this week. And we have three dandies to look forward to.
Florida at LSU: We’re really thankful that this game is being played … as are a whole bunch of people in East Tennessee who happen to be fans of the Volunteers. LSU gets an extra home game and we all get the benefit of an actual SEC game this weekend. (Grumble, grumble, grumble.)
Washington State at Colorado: Don’t look now, but these two teams are sitting atop each of their respective Pac-12 divisions. For the most part, they’ve flown under everyone’s radars … but on Saturday afternoon, they’ll be firmly in the spotlight.
Oklahoma at West Virginia: Suddenly after Thursday night’s events, this game becomes really, really important, not just for the Big 12 but for the college football landscape in general. Mountaineer fans have a beef that their beloved team is ranked below Oklahoma despite having just one loss on the season … and they’ll get the opportunity to state their case in the national spotlight at home, playing host to the surging Sooners. Hide your couches. This is going to be a good one.
So, continue developing your playoff theories … grab yourself a cupcake … and enjoy the football this weekend.
