Reggie Bush: Former Heisman Winner?

Sources say that Reggie Bush will be a Heisman Trophy winner no more. In fact, these sources say that Reggie might soon be more appropriately termed a Heisman Trophy loser.

Oops.

Apparently Reggie was so shady the year that he “won” the Heisman Trophy, accepting cash, gifts and other “impermissible benefits” (what is left besides cash and gifts? Hmmm.) that he was ineligible to play and therefore to win the most prestigious award in NCAA football. This, no matter what a great job he did on the football field. For its part, USC is breaking up with Bush, removing any images and mementos of him from its athletic facilities.

The Heisman Trophy Trust has investigated this for three months, after the NCAA June retroactive ruling that Bush was ineligible for part of the 2004 and all of the 2005 season. The Heisman Trophy Trust and the NCAA, it is safe to say, do not care for Reggie Bush at all. Why?

Not only will he have to return his trophy, but USC is still under investigation for its role in Bush’s shenanigans and may lose its 2004 Bowl Championship Series national title. The Trust supposedly wants to maintain the integrity of the Heisman, and also to hold Bush accountable to what the ballot says: that players must be in compliance with NCAA by-laws when they win.

Reggie Bush has obviously gone on to major NFL success, including this year’s Super Bowl win with the New Orleans Saints. He’s been quiet about the Heisman issue so far. It’s just too bad to have that kind of accomplishment invalidated because he couldn’t manage to turn down money and trinkets — hard as that might be to do in certain situations. And it’s even worse to have your own school have to remove any evidence that you were there, no matter how much a legitimately acquired Super Bowl ring may soften the blow.

Laurie wonders who was doling out these impermissible benefits and what they were, because she is nosey.

Laurie won her first writing award at her Maryland Catholic elementary school - an envelope of two-dollar bills from football-crazy nuns - in the second grade for a poem about the Washington Redskins. She still does not understand downs, so this just proves that she will write just about anything for the promise of money and minor glory. Try her. Her other interests include the WNBA, Dayton basketball (Go Flyers!,) tailgating, Capitals first-period goals, three-pointers and beer. She dislikes any former Patrick Division team, (especially the Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers) overtime any time and serial retirers. She will someday have Capitals season tickets, attend an NFL game, and understand downs. Other writing happens at LaurieWrites and BlogHer. She still lives in - and loves - Maryland.

I wrote a post on Reggie & his Heisman/cheating ways yesterday too! http://elzabelz.blogspot.com/2010/09/heisman-toss-backlateralreturn.html

Amazing how the short-sighted actions of one person can impact what a team of people contributed to accomplish. I think that cheating was so rampant at USC that everyone is implicated in some way. Of course, I generally think USC are a bunch of cheating thugs anyway….

This is so crazy. This never happens. Why can’t people just follow the rules anymore?

Don’t make me root for Tim Tebow or Peyton Manning.
