NCAA Football Coach Swap

As promised, I’m back with the latest in NCAA football coach musical chairs. You really can’t tell a player without a program anymore.

Lane Kiffin: From Tennessee to USC. Violations. Investigations. And L’il Wayne. Blah, blah, blah. It just sucks that I happen to live in LA and will hear about this yahoo for-evah. Yeah, I’m not too jazzed.

Related: Derek Dooley will replace Kiffin at Tennessee. Who? Oh well. After the drama of Kiffin and the ongoing investigations, who could blame them? I’m ready for the Vols to be back in the top 10. Anyone with me?

One of the most watched hires will be Brian Kelly as he attempts to return the Blue and Gold to their former glory. Under Charlie Weiss, Notre Dame took a nose dive in defense, quarterbacks, and, oh yeah, WINS. The buzz on Kelly is positive, so keep an eye out for Irish fans rising from the ashes all around you to rally behind their team.

One of my personal favorite coaches, Bobby Bowden, left some big shoes to fill at Florida State, and I hope that Jimbo Fisher will deliver, if not in pure class, then at least in wins. The Bowden winning legacy, a whopping 315-97-4 record, will take a lifetime to top. Get movin’ Jimbo.

Yes, as previously reported, Tommy Tubberville will go to Texas Tech. Thankfully, Ruffin McNeill, former Tech defensive coordinator , was hired by his alma mater, East Carolina University. A class act amidst the chaos of the Leach debacle, McNeill is poised to do an excellent job for the Pirates.

Other notable new hires are Skip Holtz at South Florida and the proven Mike London at Virginia.

Phew. I’m exhausted. Anyone want to go out for a beer?

Karen Sugarpants Gets All Canadian on Your Asses: A Guest Post

Watch this (it’s going to anger you.)

Disgusting right? I’m FURIOUS. Cormier, the kid with the vicious elbow, is 19. Tam, who remains in hospital with a brain injury, is 18.

This isn’t the first time for Cormier. He has done this before.

My question is, when in the history of his hockey playing did he pick up the idea that this was acceptable behaviour? Never mind that many young hockey players are watching him, looking up to him as the captain of Canada’s World Juniors at IIHF this year, never mind that to watch that video turns many people’s stomachs. The fact is, THIS IS
NOT HOCKEY.

This year was the first year for Dylan’s team to be allowed to use physical contact in their games. The kids went to a body-checking clinic, were shown proper ways to hit, and warned strongly against cheap shots and hitting from behind. Some may say hitting shouldn’t be a part of hockey. Whatever. It’s in the rule books and probably never going away, so kids need to be taught the proper way to do so, not to cause harm to others but to gain control of the puck, stop shots and throw the opposing team off their game.

At the beginning of our season, one of Dylan’s teammates checked an opposing player improperly, and hard. He came off the ice in a wash of joy, and said a little too loud, “It felt good to hit that kid!”

What can I say, they are new at this checking thing and it’s probably a bit of a rush, right? They’re 11. They’re learning.

His joy was quickly extinguished by Daren, my husband and the team manager. He lit into our joyous little player, telling him it wasn’t okay to hit “just to hit” and that his hit, while it didn’t harm the other kid, was unnecessary since the puck had been at the other end of the ice. After the game Daren and the other coaches talked to the kids in the dressing room about when to hit, how to hit and made them answer questions about sportsmanship and the checking clinic they had just attended. Our team hits less than most of the teams we play, but we get less penalties and more power-plays and the kids are okay with that.

Daren plays hockey as well, and tells me all the time there are guys who get on the ice with the intention of playing dirty. They do it for the adrenaline or whatever, or sometimes they are just dickheads.

“We all have to get up and go to work the next day,” he says. “There’s no point in killing each other.”

10 years ago he watched as a guy took a skate to the jugular and nearly died in a pick-up game. While Daren is a bit of a brick wall at 6’2″ and 230 lbs of muscle and he can hold his own and rock out anyone who is being a dick on the ice, not everyone can defend themselves as effectively.

What Cormier did was inexcusable. At 19 years old, he should know better. He should be suspended until Mikael Tam can play hockey again, if not for life.

Azarenka – Izza gonna put on my earmuffs.

I’m watching Serena Williams play Victoria Azarenka. I think if Captain Kirk had an Azarenka handy he wouldn’t have had to time travel and steal our whales.

Nancy Kerrigan’s Father Found Dead; Brother Arrested

Nancy_KerriganThe father of former Olympic figure skater Nancy Kerrigan has died and Kerrigan’s brother Mark has been charged with assault, according to Massachusetts police.

Daniel Kerrigan died on Sunday after what authorities are calling a “violent struggle” with his son. Many will remember Kerrigan from footage of him carrying Nancy to the locker room after she was attacked prior to her performance in the 1994 U.S. Figure Skating Championships. The assault nearly derailed her Olympic chances.

Mark Kerrigan, 45, was arrested and charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon on an elderly person and causing serious bodily injury. He pled not guilty and his bail was set at $10,000.

According to The Boston Globe, Mark was described by his attorney as “an unemployed plumber and an Army veteran with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder who regularly receives counseling.”

Police said Mark Kerrigan appeared intoxicated when he was found on a couch in the basement of the home and was “belligerent and combative” but coherent when questioned. Officers used pepper spray to subdue him and eventually arrested him.

“He stated that he wanted to use the phone and his father would not let him. He said he struggled with his father and put his hands around his father’s neck and his father fell to the floor,” the arresting officer wrote.

NANCY KERRIGAN MODJESKA webMark Kerrigan told officers that he believed his father was “faking it,” according to the report.

Mark is no stranger to assault charges. He was recently released from prison, where he had been since May, 2006, on a separate assault charge, according to the records. And his “long criminal record – including arrests for assault and battery, assault with a dangerous weapon, malicious destruction and violation of a restraining order” – was brought up in his arraignment when bail was determined.

An autopsy has been scheduled and results are expected to take up to two weeks. Services for Daniel Kerrigan will take place on Thursday.

Fool Me Once, Shame on You. Fool Me Infinity, Shame on Me.

Screw you Brett, Favre. I’ve heard it all before.

brett_favre_jets_football_retires_again

After Minnesota’s 31-28 loss to the New Orleans Saints in last night’s NFC Championship game Favre is now saying that another year of football is “highly unlikely”.

We’ve heard it all before.

I can’t wait to see what team he plays for next year.
