Honestly, I think kids get the idea that cheap shots and fights are what hockey is all about from the NHL and its many affiliated minor leagues. I was shocked when I went to my first minor league game to see how many fights there were, and how absofuckinglutely nuts the crowd went when they started. No goal was ever cheered so loudly. Heck, before the Phantoms left Philadelphia, the billboards around town showed players fighting and invited fans to come out to watch the brawls. Is this boxing, or hockey? It’s not as bad at the NHL level, where actual hockey skill levels are higher, but the fans still cheer the fights too enthusiastically for my taste.
We’ll never get fighting and cheap shots completely out of hockey, I know; even at my non-checking recreational level there are retaliatory fights and hits. It’s a physical sport even when checking isn’t allowed. I love the way your husband handled the situation with his team, and I hope those kids continue to be coached that way as they grow in the sport.
