I’m torn. I don’t think he necessarily should have been given the chance to return. I don’t think as an NFL organization I would give him the chance. But, since he has been reinstated he’d better keep his nose clean and work his ass off and finally produce. He doesn’t really have a choice, does he?
I’m really disturbed by his reinstatement. I don’t think his punishment was severe enough. And for him to just go back to football like nothing ever happened? Makes me kind of sick.
I was going to post about this but I ran out of time last night so now I’ll just comment on yours rather than inflict another picture of Michael Vick on the world.
First of all, I absolutely think he can return because there’s nothing America loves more than a phoenix from the ashes story, and in most cases people who have done (in my opinion) reprehensible things are given passes based on lots of different factors, particularly in cases where celebrity is concerned.
I have written about this in other venues from an animal welfare perspective and the point/counterpoint that’s often set up is “crazy animal activists” vs. “criminal dog fighters” and it’s a lot more gray than that. There’s one of those stupid Facebook polls about whether he ought to be allowed to return and a surprising number of my contacts on there have voted yes. (Some of them are still my contacts.
) There are myriad reasons for this which are deeper than I want to get in a comment here.
The football and the dog fighting issues are shaking out into two separate ones. The NFL has done what I believe it was always going to do in reinstating him. Roger Goodell said all the things he needed to say about the requirements for rehabilitation. Michael Wilbon stated in his piece yesterday in the Post that Vick had paid more than his debt, and in fact by making him wait until the 6th game of the season he was being punished more than was due. I completely disagree, but I’m looking at this through a different lens, one that sees what he did as criminal meaning he should no longer be given a chance to make millions of dollars in any venue at all. As it stands, he’s being allowed to come back in time for high school orientation and then he has detention until Thanksgiving. Big deal. And coverage like Wilbon’s tells me he’ll have somewhere to go by then. Another blogger there floated some possibilities:

I’m curious about what they’re going to have him do with the Humane Society and whether it will have any value at all. If they give him PSA duty I’ll be sick because all you need for one of those is a continuous loop of footage of the damaged dogs he had in that ring, no music, no people, no Sarah McLachlan style-voiceovers. He SHOULD be required to bankroll the shelters that took them in, for the rest of his life.
I know very little about football and even less about the NFL as an organization. I’m a dog lover and also a realist. If he isn’t picked up I’ll be surprised but maybe someone who knows more about the teams can say who if anyone would be willing to do it. PR nightmare, sure, but if (if…) he can win some games I’d venture to say it’ll go a long way towards smoothing it over. Sad but true.
